Oslo Met: a future network for learning, research and operations
Digital infrastructure is no longer a background system for universities and colleges. Today, the network and data centre are the very foundation for teaching, research, hybrid learning, data security and administration. OsloMet, Oslo Metropolitan University, has in recent years invested significantly in a modern, scalable and automated network platform based on Juniper Networks. The goal has been clear: ensure stable operations, a great user experience and forward looking technology that can grow with the needs of staff, students and research communities.
nLogic has supported OsloMet with architecture, design, implementation and quality assurance for both the wireless infrastructure and the data centre network. The result is one of the most modern university networks in Norway, built for scalability, security and continuous innovation.
The need: a network built for change, not just today’s traffic
University environments place special demands on infrastructure. A campus includes everything from lecture halls and libraries to laboratories, cafeterias, administrative buildings, student areas and external locations. The number of users and devices changes constantly, and the load varies from hour to hour.
For OsloMet, three factors were decisive:
1. Stability and capacity Thousands of students and staff rely on the wireless network every day. Not just for traditional learning, but also for digital whiteboards, audiovisual solutions, hybrid teaching and research environments with high data demands.
2. Automation and operational simplicity A large network requires smart tools that reduce manual processes, provide insight and quickly detect faults.
3. A data centre that supports research and operations The university needs a secure and efficient infrastructure for applications, storage, authentication, administration, learning portals and access services.
OsloMet therefore wanted a platform that is robust, easy to operate and ready for future demands. Whether that means IoT, new ways of learning or growing security requirements.
The solution: HPE Networks across campus and data centre
Over several phases, OsloMet has invested in a complete solution from Juniper Networks. The platform is built on modern principles such as automation, microservices, user experience measurement and integrated security.
1. Wireless network powered by Mist AI
The university’s wireless infrastructure has been upgraded to modern Wi-Fi with the Mist platform at its core. The main benefit is that the wireless network no longer just “works”. It delivers insight.
With Juniper Mist, the IT department gets:
- continuous monitoring of user experience
- proactive fault detection
- automated troubleshooting analytics
- predictable coverage and capacity in classrooms and lecture halls
- simpler management of guest access and BYOD
Mist AI continuously analyses network data and identifies the root causes of instability, with no need to manually search through logs. This means faster response and a better experience for end users.
2. Wired infrastructure
The campus backbone and distribution layer are built on Juniper switches, with a focus on performance, stability and operational reliability. With EVPN-VXLAN as the architecture, OsloMet can segment traffic, simplify changes and scale the network without major rebuilds.
- flexible segmentation between buildings, lab environments and administrative services
- high availability with redundant topologies
- easy integration with the data centre and security services
3. Data centre network for operations and research
OsloMet has invested in a modern data centre network based on the Juniper QFX platform. It handles critical services such as authentication, applications, research systems, learning platforms and internal solutions.
- EVPN-VXLAN ensures a scalable and flexible architecture
- automation enables faster rollout of new services
- high bandwidth allows large datasets and research traffic to be processed efficiently
- simplified operations through centralised management
For universities with long system lifecycles and ever growing data volumes, this is an investment that pays off both now and in the years ahead.
Why HPE Networks?
The university sector has a long tradition of technical expertise, open standards and flexible solutions. OsloMet therefore wanted a platform that:
- does not lock the infrastructure to a single vendor
- supports automation and API based management
- provides detailed insight into user experience
- reduces manual troubleshooting
- scales without costly replacements
The Mist platform stands apart from traditional wireless solutions because data is analysed continuously and presented as actionable alerts. Instead of spending time locating a fault, the operations team gets the answer directly: what caused the fault, where it occurs and which users are affected.
The implementation
nLogic has supported the entire project: needs assessment, design, simulation, installation and optimisation. As new buildings and rooms are upgraded, the solution is rolled out further using a standardised methodology and documentation.
The process has included:
- theoretical coverage and capacity per building and floor
- access point placement based on actual use in teaching and research
- replacement and segmentation of the wired infrastructure
- integration into the data centre network
- automation and monitoring via the Mist dashboard and Junos tools
The work has also focused on ensuring a smooth transition from legacy technology without downtime.
Results: a stable network, fewer faults and more insight
A modern network only succeeds when end users notice it, and when the IT department actually spends less time firefighting. OsloMet has achieved several clear benefits:
- Stable wireless coverage across campus, including in heavily used classrooms
- Faster troubleshooting and incident handling, with AI identifying root causes without manual log analysis
- Better user experience, with fewer complaints about unstable connections
- Stronger data centre architecture: scalable, secure and easy to maintain
- Less operational complexity, with fewer manual changes and more automation
- A technology platform for further digitalisation: IoT, smart campus, hybrid teaching, sensors and more
For a university that both teaches and researches technology, choosing a modern, open and programmable architecture is also the right strategic choice. The platform is built for innovation, not just conventional operations.
A campus network for the future
The university sector faces continuous technological change:
- increased use of artificial intelligence
- more video and hybrid collaboration
- sensors and IoT in buildings
- high bandwidth research data
- autonomous operations
- security requirements and segmentation
The new network allows OsloMet to keep developing its campus without major structural changes. The solution is modular, scalable and automated, making it well suited to changes in teaching methods, capacity and technology.
For the university, this is also an investment in quality. Digital services must be available without interruption, whether it is exam time, a lecture, internal operations or research in progress.
nLogic as a partner
nLogic has extensive experience with network projects in the university and research sector. For OsloMet, our role has been advisor, architect and technical partner, with a focus on:
- thorough documentation
- standardised deliveries
- knowledge transfer
- quality and scalability
- technical support and further development
The project has had a long term horizon, with operations and technical insight at its centre. A good network is not just about equipment. It is about processes, methodology, quality and sound architecture.
Summary
